The Science Behind PittMoss
What is PittMoss made out of?
PittMoss is made from upcycled natural cellulosic fibers, like newspaper, with added natural mineral ingredients. Various PittMoss products contain added nutrients and fertilizers for a complete potting/gardening mix.
If you are making PittMoss out of newspaper, are there any toxins to be concerned with?
Not at all, newspaper breaks down to cellulosic fiber, which is an all-organic material, and soy-based ink. In fact, a 1997 EPA study of our newspaper blend determined it was perfectly safe. If you are interested in reading the study, email info@pittmoss.com
Is the product contaminant free?
No contaminants, bugs, weeds or pesticides are in this product. PittMoss recently completed a stringent pesticide test. Read more here.
Why does my PittMoss look moldy?
Depending on your environment, you may notice some mold-like matter develop. We encourage you to read our article on the subject. In summary, there is no need to worry. For optimal plant growth, microbial development (which, during a bloom, produces fungi and mold) is not harmful and means things like to grow in PittMoss. PittMoss encourages beneficial microbial growth that your plants will benefit from. Mixing the soil will help in the disappearance. We like to say PittMoss is like pro-biotics for your plants!™

Using PittMoss in Potting & Gardening
What can I plant with PittMoss?
PittMoss is a great growing medium for flowers, vegetables, shrubs, grass and more! Warning – if you do have acid-loving plants, be aware that our product is pH neutral but easy to adjust.
What level of pH does the product arrive with?
PittMoss is pH neutral and can easily be adjusted. Consumers have become accustom to the lower pH of peat and peat-based products. Because PittMoss is pH neutral, please adjust, lowering the pH for plants that require acidic soil.
Can I seed start in PittMoss?
We currently do not have a specific seed starting blend. That said, many gardeners have told us they have found success using both 100% PittMoss, or amending it with a seedling blend. We hope to develop a product specifically for propagation but in the mean time, if you like to experiment we encourage you to see if it works for you!
Is it true that I can water less with PittMoss?
PittMoss has an amazing capacity to retain water and the best practice is to keep your PittMoss on the drier side. We encourage the finger test. If the top layer feels too dry, stick your finger in the soil to see if the lower layers still contain moisture.
What should I do if the product looks compacted after shipping/storage?
Shipping or storage at a facility may have compacted PittMoss. Thankfully, you can easily fluff up PittMoss, restoring the air space and lightness of the fiber.
What is the best way to store PittMoss?
Ideally, you should store in a cool, dry dark area. However, keeping it room temperature and out of direct sunlight is a sufficient option.
Do you sell in bulk?
Yes. We have a full line of commercial products available and we sell all of our retail products in bulk. Email info@pittmoss.com or fill out our form on the website to receive rates.
