A complete potting mix, peat-free and nutrient-rich, with a custom Controlled Release Fertilizer (CRF). Performance is the best soil for sustainably minded gardeners. This growing media is lightweight, and significantly less dusty than traditional soil mediums. Performance is also the cleanest, most consistent soil on the market, with no pathogens, weed seeds or other heavy metals and harmful ingredients and every batch is tested to ensure quality and optimal performance. PittMoss Performance is a soilless potting mix that also requires significantly less water and applied fertilizer because of its ability to retain and better manage applied resources, evenly distributing them throughout the porous particles to be more available to the plant’s roots. PittMoss Performance is the best soil with high amounts of readily available carbon, perfect for creating a living soil environment that is chalk-full of soil biology! Performance is a great all-purpose nutrient-rich potting mix perfect for indoor pots and planters, flower gardening, soil improvement, grass seeding, and anywhere else you would use traditional potting mix.
How it’s Made: Performance is made from PittMoss’s proprietary and revolutionary recycled paper fiber. PittMoss engineers this fiber to have incredible properties that allows plants to grow big and strong, even under stressful conditions. This revolutionary product is the most sustainable and high-performing growing media on the market made 100% in the United Sates. PittMoss sources all paper ingredients from local recycling facilities and hand sorts each batch to ensure zero contaminants. Each batch is hand sorted and processed in Ambridge, PA using PittMoss’s custom and patent-pending machinery. PittMoss conducts extensive testing on each batch, and proudly shares information on heavy metals and more with the public via our blog and published research, and as requested.
Ingredients: 99.4% PittMoss paper fibers, with small amounts of organic bark. This blend is fertilized with a custom Controlled Release Fertilizer (CRF) that provides a consistent release of fertilizer to your plants. pH balanced and easily adjusted for specific plant needs.
NPK: N (0.24%) P (0.11%) K (0.18%). When applying additional fertilizer, PittMoss recommends a quality, high-nitrogen fertilizer that is not urea based. For example, we suggest products like Espoma Grow! or fish emulsion

I bought this thinking it'd be a "close enough" substitute for peat moss based potting soil with the benefit of being an eco-friendly option. Was not expecting it to perform BETTER than peat moss?! It's the perfect medium for growing my vegetable starts. They're vigorous and healthy and I don't need to water them as often as with regular potting mix. I've suggested this to my local garden center in hopes they will carry it!
I definitely have to watch the moisture levels more closely. This product will crust much like clay will. I'm also concerned about how this product will behave long term as I can still see letters on bits of the paper. It has a long way to go to be truly broken down and recycled.
I have used Pittmoss by itself and mixed with soil and have found that the water retention is amazing. I water less often using Pittmoss which is exactly what I wanted.
I haven't used it yet but I'm going to add it to my garden in the spring with the rest of my pittmoss collection. I used it last year and was very satisfied and parts on my patio and in my vegetable garden.
Very easy to use. Moisture content ready for transplanting. Consistent mixture from bag to bag.
