Things to Know Before Using PittMoss®

1. Be sure to not over-water. PittMoss has an amazing capacity to retain water and the best practice is to keep your PittMoss on the dryer side. 

2. Fluff it up. Shipping may have compacted your order, so make sure your PittMoss is fluffy when you mix or plant. This will allow PittMoss to maxamize it's porosity and water retention properties (which is why the product is so magical). 

3. Green is Good. Depending on your environment, you may notice some green matter develop. This is a good and means things like to grow in PittMoss. PittMoss encourages beneficial microbial growth that your plants will benefit from. What is PittMoss®?

PittMoss is a manufacturer of growing media, amendments and conditioners. The properties of PittMoss are revolutionary, providing consumers a new way to garden. 

What is PittMoss® Made Out Of?

PittMoss is made from upcycled natural cellulosic fibers, like newspaper, with added natural mineral ingredients.

If you are making PittMoss® from newspaper, are there any toxins to be concerned with?

Not at all, newspaper breaks down to cellulosic fiber which is an all organic material and soy-based ink.

What type of products does PittMoss® sell?

  • PittMoss Prime: The base for all PittMoss products. PittMoss Prime replaces and out-performs peat moss, perlite, vermiculate and coir. Instead of buying all of these products separately, PittMoss Prime provides all the benefits in one bag.
  • PittMoss Performance: PittMoss Prime with an added Controlled Release Fertilizer (CRF)
  • PittMoss Prestige: Use PittMoss for horse bedding

Why is my PittMoss® turning green?

What is the pH of PittMoss®?

PittMoss has a near-neutral pH that is easy to balance.

What is the germination rate of PittMoss®? 

PittMoss Performance growing mix provides for the best possible germination rates due to the exceptional water holding properties.  You should expect germination to be as good as or better than in conventional growing mixes.  In our research we have found that the weaker seeds benefit from the uniform moisture that is provided by the PittMoss fibers.   As a caution, do not over water as the PittMoss holds and delivers water exceptionally well. Our soil amendment, PittMoss Prime, is also very successful when used with a good quality potting mix at a rate of about 1/3 PittMoss to 2/3 conventional mix.
